The Cellar, Breckenridge: Another One Bites the Dust

The news in yesterday's Summit Daily was grim. The State has seized The Cellar Restaurant, as well as Samplings, her sister in Frisco. This is the second time that this has happened within a three-month period. The first was La Petite Francaise, which in a gesture of extreme good will, was rescued by some generous.

However, whether The Cellar is rescued or not, it will no doubt be bought by some other business owner. That said, its history is rather interesting. This is an excerpt from my Breckenridge Guidebook, which is a work in progress:

The Cellar Wine Bar and Restaurant,
located at <st1:Street><st1:address>22 South Ridge Street</st1:address></st1:Street>.
Back in the 1880s, it was the home of newspaperman Charles Hardy, who owned the
Summit County Leader. Hardy's
newspaper spread the word about rich ores in the mining area. He also featured
columns praising the good people in the town. Additionally, the newspaper
featured commentary on things that needed fixing, such as deteriorating
bridges, stray dogs and railroads running off schedule. While the Summit County Leader was Republican, the
Summit County Journal, which was the
competing paper, was Democratic.

There's a bit of irony in the fact
that Charles Hardy and Christ Kaiser were neighbors. While Hardy was a staunch
Republican, on <st1:date month="6" day="6" year="1908">June 6, 1908</st1:date>,
the Summit County Journal announced that Christ Kaiser would be the
Breckenridge delegate for the National Convention in Denver.
According to the paper, "He is Democrat, all Democrat when it comes to party." Up
until the recent closing of The Cellar, the two restaurants were competing for
the coveted title of most elegant dining venue in Breckenridge. However, if one
could time travel to the late 1800s, it would be interesting to observe the
social dynamics of the two neighbors from opposite ends of the political
spectrum.

Snow Falling In Breckenridge

In case you didn't know, the last two days have brought snow to Breckenridge. Not just a little bit of snow, but serious calf high snow. Temperatures are also pretty cold, so the snow might stick around for awhile. In fact, yesterday it was so cold the lock boxes on the Breckenridge museums were completely frozen. Today, it's a wee bit warmer, which means that the snow will be soft and fluffy. At this point, everyone needs to do a little dance in honor of Ullr, the God of Snow. Please ask him to keep up the good work, so that we might have an incredible opening day on November 1st.

Have you booked your Breckenridge condo yet? No? what are you waiting for?

Established in 1976, this incredible organization provides adaptive programs for skiers, snowboarders and cyclists.

One of their most impressive programs is the Adaptive Ski & Ride School, which offers one-to-one instruction for people with disabilities. Additionally, BOEC hosts a number of unique programs. Here's one that's near and dear to my heart, for a very specific reason.

My novel, Reflections in the Snow, is currently in the editing process, and under contract with Calderwood books. It tells the story of a woman who loses her father as a result of the 9/11 attacks. She leaves New York and moves to Breckenridge, with hope of learning about her father's past as a soldier in the 10th Mountain Division. While she's there, she comes to terms with his death by getting involved with the Wounded Warrior's Disabled Sports Program.

The BOEC, in conjunction with the Wounded Warriors, sponsors an annual soldiers week. The above photo by Charles Sneiderman shows a picture of the event. According to their website:

"The Soldier's Spring Ski Week 2009 (SSSW) Project is a partnership of
the Wounded Warriors Disabled Sports Project and the Breckenridge
Outdoor Education Center (BOEC). This Project provides a snow
skiing/snowboarding experience for permanently, severely injured
service members from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts and the Global
War on Terrorism. The purpose of this Project is to support the
recovery and family bonding of these severely injured soldiers and
their family support structure (spouse and children) by spending a week
of snow sport adventure in the incredible beauty of the Rocky Mountains
of Colorado."

The Coroner's Ball, Breckenridge

As if the Haunted Halloween party at the Briggle House was not enough of a reason to enjoy Halloween in Breckenridge, consider this. On November 1st, you can attend a real dead beat event: The Annual Coroner's Ball. The theme is Day of the Dead and the location is Napper Tandy's above Salt Creek Saloon in Breckenridge. The Southern Rock band HELLO DAVE will be performing. They'll be a silent auction, coffin races, dancing, costume contest and dinner. The
    cost is $35.

The Coroner's Ball benefits the Coroner's fund, which assists Summit County residents with
some of the fees associated with burial, cremation or grief counseling. Don't forget: Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are now open, so why not get in some early season skiing, while supporting a great cause. Those of you who listened will be skiing Arapahoe Basin on October 15. The 18 inch base combines man-made snow with a little help from Mother Nature. Apparently, a bit of snow blew in this past weekend. As a result, kiers and boarders can warm up for the season on the intermediate High Noon run and
the High Divide Terrain Park.

If you don't have s season pass, opening day adult lift tickets will cost $49. Teens age 15 to 19 get $5 off that price; and kids 6 to 14 pay just $25. Equipment rentals, the tune shop and food will also be available on opening day.

Meanwhile, according to the Loveland website

"Catwalk, Mambo and Homerun offer nearly 1000 vertical feet with
tree-to-tree coverage and an 18 inch base. Consistently cold
temperatures over the weekend and early this week allowed our
snowmakers to finish up the last little bit we needed to open.
Snowmaking will continue as we begin to focus on other areas of the
mountain."

Two great mountains and two early season openings. How cool is that?

A Shout Out to the Breckenridge Dog House

The other day,I wrote a post about Breckenridge dogs, and mentioned the Breckenridge Dog House. You're probably wondering why the above photo shows a picture of my cat. At 13 years old, Willow wanted nothing more out of life than to sit in
our laps and give constant kisses. Perhaps her only other joy was
tormenting our greyhound Giselle, or teasing Blackcomb, our other cat.

My husband and I are currently traveling through France and Italy. Giselle is
staying at "camp," otherwise known as the Dog House in Breckenridge.
Two of the girls from the Dog House have been coming in to look in on
the cats.

Today, enroute from Firenze to Roma, Mark's cell phone rang. We were
just going into a tunnel, so he could not receive the call. Later, he
would listen to a message that would bring bad news. When Nicole from
the Dog House came in on Friday, she found that Willow had crossed over
the Rainbow Bridge.

Rather than leave Blackcomb by himself, they decided to bring him to
the Dog House and put him in the same room with Giselle. Since Giselle
had originally found him as an abused kitten in a shopping bag, they
are quite close.

So here we are in this
beautiful room in Roma, complete with a private balcony, and all I can do is grieve. Tomorrow, we will
go to the Colosseum, where the stray cats roam. Not sure why, but it
seems like the right thing to do. Otherwise, I feel as if my soul, if I
ever had one, has been separated from my body.

But for now, a shout out for the Breckenridge Dog House. They truly go the extra mile!

The Breckenridge Big Mountain Experience

Although some people associate Breckenridge with its mellow terrain, there's a whole lot more to the mountain than the trails off the Quicksilver and Beaver Run lifts. In fact, if you're ready to explore the bowls and other types of advanced terrain, you're definitely ready for the Breckenridge Big Mountain experience.

The Big Mountain Experience uses the finest instructors in the Breckenridge Ski & Ride School. Your group of four students makes the decision about the type of terrain you wish to tackle. Want to explore the trails off the Imperial Super Chair, which is the highest lift in the country? No problem! Your wish is your instructor's command! Remember, it's not enough to be able to "do" the trails, (a term that I hate with a passion)after a few Big Mountain lessons, you will be able to finesse this terrain. It's the difference between being a gaper and a player!

So book your Breckenridge condo and come on out!

The Dogs of Breckenridge, Colorado

In the past few weeks, I've been doing a bit of traveling. Since my husband travels for business, he's accumulated a massive number of frequent flyer miles and hotel points, which, under new regulations, will soon be worth a whole lot less. Fortunately, we've been using them up before they are devalued.

I am in Paris as I write this blog post. I know, it's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it!. Yet of all the places I've visited within the past year, there's one thing I've noticed: Nobody treats their dogs the way people of Summit County treat theirs. It's disturbing, actually. While I think that most stereotypes about Parisians are false, don't even think of petting their dogs.

In contrast, if you need a bit of pet therapy, just take a walk near the Blue River. People in Breckenridge encourage interaction with their dogs. So if you have to leave Fido or Fluffy at home during your Breckenridge vacation, rest assured that you will find plenty of puppy love right here in Breck. And to paraphrase Stephen Stills, if you can't be with the dog you love, love the dog you're with. If you want to travel with your pup but can't find pet friendly lodging, the Dog House on Airport Road is a great place to send your dog to "camp." Then, reward your furry friend by purchasing some treats at the Barkery on Main Street!

Jeff & Jennifer Bergeron: Two Names You Should Know

Let's face it. Breckenridge is a pretty small town. However, we seem to have duplicates of things that are often considered rare. For example, the historic society owns two Edison phonographs. What's so weird about that? Edison was the competitor of Victor. Victor made the better product, as in Victrola, right? As such, Thomas Edison phonographs are pretty rare. Yet we have two in Breckenridge. Go figure!

By now you're wondering what on earth this has to do with ski boots and Jeff Bergeron. It's simple. Jeff Bergeron aka Captain America is not the same person as Jeff Bergeron of Boot Fixation. The name is uncommon, yet there are two Jeff Bergerons in Summit County.

While both Jeffs have contributed to the dynamic Summit County lifestyle, it's the boot work of Jeff the bootfitter that has changed the skiing style of many of the local skiers. In fact, his work is so popular, that people don't say that they're going to have their boots fitted. They say they're going to Jeff. Boot Fixation is located at 127 South Street, inside Norway Haus.

As if great bootfitting was not enough, Jeff and his wife Jen have written a book entitled Ski Like a Diva. According to their description,
"Ski Like a Diva is specifically designed to encourage beginner and intermediate
women skiers through the challenges skiing presents: fear, weather and self-imposed
		pressure to name a few"

If you know an aspiring female skier, do her a favor and get her a copy of this book.

Halloween Happenings in Breckenridge

That also means that Loveland and Arapahoe Basin will be having their annual competition for the bragging rights of being first to open. Keep in mind, many breckenridge lift tickets and season passes allow skiing at The Basin, so now you have more reasons to book a Breckenridge vacation rental.

Plus, just a friendly reminder, you don't want to miss the cool Halloween Happenings in Breckenridge. For example, between 4:30-8PM, head over to the Briggle House on 104 North Harris Street. Details here.

On Friday, October 31, the Breckenridge Theatre will present the Mystery of Irma Vep. According to the Breckenridge Theatre website,

"Premiered by Backstage Theatre in 1991, this outrageous spoof by
Charles Ludlam, the late founder of New York City's Ridiculous
Theatrical Company, is a campy tribute to Gothic horror films,
liberally stealing from well-known film classics like "Wuthering
Heights", "The Mummy's Curse" and Alfred Hitchcock's Academy
Award-winning "Rebecca".

Two actors play all of the play's eight characters, racing through a
literal quick-change marathon complete with werewolves, vampires and
damsels in distress. Combine all that with crazy plot twists (two
characters travel from England to Egypt to inspect a mummy), and "The
Mystery of Irma Vep" guarantees fun for everyone."

Here's the best part. The show is performed by two of Summit County's most hilarious actors, Skip Miller and Christopher Willard. These guys will have you laughing for hours!

I'll post more events as I hear about them. Stay tuned!
